Occupational Risks for Job Descriptions

Below are a selection of potential job related risks for which there are established Occupational Medicine programs. Please consult with the Hiring Official to determine if any of these risks are relevant for this position. This is not an exhaustive list. For your internal department purposes, please consider other risks that may be associated with the posting.
Animal Handling Applies to employees with direct animal contact which is defined as touching live animals, unpreserved animal tissues or body fluids, dirty animal cages, dirty cage accessories, animal waste or carcasses as a regular duty of the job description. This risk applies to faculty, animal caretakers and technicians, research technicians, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in teaching and research labs and Facility Management pest control employees.
Research Related Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Applies to all employees with research exposure (i.e., reasonably anticipated skin, eye, mucous membrane, or needle stick or open skin contact with (1) Blood, semen, vaginal secretions, fluid from around the brain and spinal cord, fluid from inside joints, fluid from around the lungs, fluid from around the heart or other organs, amniotic fluid, saliva in dental procedures, any body fluid that is visibly contaminated with blood, and all body fluids in situations where it is difficult or impossible to differentiate between body fluids; (2) Any unfixed tissue or organ (other than intact skin) from a human (living or dead); and (3) HIV-containing cell or tissue cultures, organ cultures, and HIV- or HBV-containing culture medium or other solutions; and blood, organs, or other tissues from experimental animals infected with HIV or HBV.

Medical Clearance for Driving a Vehicle (ex Commercial Drivers License) Applies to employees who must obtain a commercial driver's license in order to complete the duties of their job.
Respiratory Protection Applies to employees who are required to wear a negative or positive pressure respirator in order to safely complete their job. This requirement is determined in consultation with DESSR and the position supervisor.
Work in BSL-3 Containment Laboratory These employees may need specific testing or protection related to exposure in the laboratory setting.
Work with agents that are infectious to humans (other than Blood Borne Pathogens) These employees may need specific testing or protection related to exposure in the laboratory setting.
