Nursing homes are licensed by State or City governments. Seniors generally enter nursing homes when they can no longer be cared for home or in an assisted living facility. Seniors are entering such facilities later and later in life and often stay no longer than two to three years. Seniors with Alzheimer’s Disease, other dementia or physical disabilities, as well as those who need temporary rehabilitation after surgery usually need nursing home care.
