Effective January I, 2014, all citizens of the United States will be required to have health insurance coverage, as mandated by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The law requires that employers notify all health benefits eligible persons that are in a paid position of this requirement, whether they are enrolled in the employer plan or not. If you are already enrolled in a health plan, you do not need to do anything. If you are eligible for the State of Maryland health coverage through the University, but not enrolled in any health plan, you may enroll in the State plan during Open Enrollment beginning October 1st or enroll in an individual plan offered by the State of Maryland exchange called the Maryland Health Connection.
USM Chancellor, Dr. Kirwan, explains this requirement and information about the exchange, along with the official Healthcare Exchange Notice required by the federal government.
If you have any questions, please call the University Human Resources Office of Employee Benefits at (301) 405-5654.
To enroll or get more information visit the Maryland Health Connection.
