April Benefits Spotlight: 5 Steps to Retirement Plus Travel Discounts

Retirement is an exciting milestone, and preparing for it early can ensure a smooth transition. If you're considering retiring from the University of Maryland in the next 12 months, it's important to take a few steps to get ready:

  1. Consult a UHR Benefits Counselor: Schedule a meeting to discuss your retirement options and ensure you're on track. Please note that counselors do prioritize individuals who are retiring within the 3-6 month window. Find your benefits counselor here.

  2. Attend a Pre-Retirement Webinar: This helpful webinar covers the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (MSRPS), including eligibility and benefits.

  3. Checklists and Forms: There are pre-retirement checklists available for both the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) and the State Retirement Pension (SRP), alongside forms for retiree health benefits on the UHR Website.

  4. Social Security and Medicare: It's also a good idea to explore how Social Security and Medicare will impact your retirement planning.

  5. Review Retiree Campus Privileges: As a UMD retiree, you can receive a University ID card so you can still use benefits like bookstore discounts, free parking, and use the libraries.

Starting early and being informed about your benefits can make your retirement experience much more enjoyable. For more details, you can reach out to UMD's University Human Resources department.
