Classification and Compensation

The Classification and Compensation team supports the University by ensuring fair, consistent, and competitive pay practices for all staff positions. Our work promotes internal equity, compliance with University System of Maryland (USM) policies, and alignment with federal and state regulations.

Our responsibilities include:

  • Administering all staff position classifications across campus
  • Managing equity and compensation analyses to support fair pay practices
  • Overseeing the University’s participation in the USM Exempt and Nonexempt Pay Programs
  • Providing advocacy and consultation for departments on job classification matters
  • Conducting departmental studies to enhance the organization and efficiency of work
  • Reviewing positions to determine appropriate classifications, titles, and salary levels
  • Conducting market salary surveys and maintaining accurate position descriptions
  • Monitoring adherence to established salary ranges and pay structures
  • Reviewing acting capacity and overload requests for compliance
  • Ensuring compliance with campus, USM, and federal regulations, including the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
  • Assisting departments with organizational planning and workforce design
