UMD Libraries: A Gateway to Professional Development

Book being pulled off library shelf

Since 2021, library use has seen a resurgence in worldwide popularity, according to OverDrive. How fortunate are we as UMD employees to have access to 6 libraries on College Park’s campus, and one at Shady Grove?! That means having access to a wealth of information for professional development (Remember, professional development is not just classes and conferences!). From books, to magazines, newspapers, to trade publications, our library system features over 4 million titles, and hosts of e-journals. There is something for everyone! If that’s not enough, here are 5 additional reasons to explore UMD Library resources:

  1. Even with 4 million titles, it is possible that the Libraries might not have something. Great news! Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a program where UMD can request materials not in UMD’s collection from another library for you to use.
  2. Too busy to make it over to McKeldin Library? Fear not! UMD employees can request to have materials delivered to their department on campus.
  3. Come for the books, stay for the events! Check out the Library’s schedule of upcoming events and workshops here
  4. Need a quiet place to think, work, or read? Find the perfect place amongst the library's vast collection of materials! The Libraries offer a wide variety of spaces across campus and you can use this handy ‘Find a Space’ tool to search for one that meets your needs.
  5. There is also a wealth of technology you can use in the library! From printers, scanners, and computers to specialized equipment in their Makerspace and labs. The Libraries offer a variety of technologies to support your professional development!
