Compensation Guidelines
The University Human Resources Classification & Compensation team is committed to developing compensation programs and strategies that support the mission of the University of Maryland. As a leading research institution, UMD must attract, motivate, and retain talented employees while ensuring responsible stewardship of institutional resources.
Our compensation programs are guided by the following principles:
- Maintain compensation structures that are externally competitive and support talent attraction, acquisition, and retention efforts.
- Promote internal equity through consistent and objective compensation practices.
- Support strategic workforce planning and organizational effectiveness.
- Address salary compression and other compensation challenges through targeted solutions.
- Recognize employee contributions and performance, as funding permits.
- Make compensation decisions that consider experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, and market conditions.
The compensation guidelines serve as general guidance for University of Maryland departments and employees. It is not intended to replace applicable University System of Maryland policies, Collective Bargaining Agreements, or other governing regulations. Policies, procedures, and guidelines are subject to change and may be amended at any time by the appropriate authority.
